Sexual Abuse in Prison Essay Example for Free

Sexual Abuse in prison EssayThe internal abuse in prison is a serious problem in our country. It is compounded by the sheer number of inmates stepping inside the prison system e truly year. It is surprising to find out that our country is widely recognized as the one with about number of prisoners. This problem however is stayable and controllable if we go away only change our attitude. We all hire rights. Conviction for a umbrage no matter how heinous our crime is leave behind not strip us of our rights. In a letter sent to the Human Rights Watch by a sender whose name was purposely withheld, the sender narrated his horrifying experience while he was inside Prison. He recountedIve been sentenced for a D. U. I. offense. My 3rd one. When I front came to prison, I had no idea what to expect. Im a tall white male, who unfortunately has a small amount of feminine characteristics. And very shy. These characteristics afford got me attaintd so many times I have no more feelin gs physically. I have been raped by up to 5 black men and 2 white men at a time.Ive had knifes at my head and throatThere is no supervision after lockdown. (No Escape staminate violate in US Prisons) This excerpt speaks of an ugly reality inside the US prison. This is the reality that we have come to accept as part of the defects in the US prison system. This is the reality that has been institutionalized in our society which contri scarcelyes not only to the perpetuation of hysteria inside prison moreover besides to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS. (Its Not My Problem)The sad thing just about this issue is that there seems to be nothing being done about this problem by government authorities. Is it because while we uphold the rule of justice and consider rehabilitation as one of the primary purposes of prison, at the back of our minds we deem that the inmates deserve what kick the buckets to them while inside the prison? This research paper deals with the issue of sexual abuse in US Prison. I aim to discuss the opposite scenarios of sexual abuse and the power relations happening inside prison that is at the core of this problem.I aim to discuss of prisoners protected by municipal and international laws. Rights of Prisoners The issue of sexual abuse in US prison is extremely important nowadays considering that according to the new report of the Justice sections Bureau of Justice, our prison population has ballooned to a total of 2 million inmates. Research also shows that since 2002 one in every one ascorbic acid forty two US citizens is locked up in jail and out of the 1,200,203 advance prisoners, 3055 inmates were younger than 18 years old. Robert Longley, 2007) Indeed, the increasing number of inmates in the US prison demands that this problem should no longer be ignored and that fewthing be done eradicate this problem. At the outset, it is important to emphasize that prisoners too have rights ir approveive whether t hey have been convicted or not.The one-eighth Amendment to the united States Constitution is emphatic about this point. It states that Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. On the an instituteer(a)(prenominal) hand, those who atomic number 18 waiting for their convictions are likewise protected under the authority of the Fifth Amendment, which states that No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jurynor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due passage of law nor shall private property be taken for reality use, without just compensation. (Fifth Amendment)In the case of Deshaney v. Winnebago City Social Services Department 489 U.S. 189 (1989), the despotic Court has declared that when the state holds a person into custody and deprives him of his liberty that he is unable to care for himself and at the time i t fails to provide him basic needs, the state violates the provisions of the Eight Amendment. Thus, the Eighth Amendment protects every prisoner from brutality imposed by the guards against him but also it requires the prison officials to give ample protection from violence that the other inmates may inflict on him.In a suit for violation of Eighth Amendment, however, the law provides that the inmate whose rights have been violated to prove the interest a) the objective element the extent of the injury the inmate has suffered which is so serous that it violates the societys standard of decency and b) the subjective element the prison knowing in full well that a violence has occurred maliciously and sadistically fails respond to this violence for the purpose of causing the inmate injury. (Hudson v. McMillian, 503 U.S. 1, 14 (1992). )Though it is quite easy to prove the number one element, the second element is very difficult to prove and presents serious obstacle against an inma te who is contemplating on filing a suit against prison officials for violation of their Eighth Amendment. In addition to the protection guaranteed under the Eighth Amendment and Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution, the DOJ has been granted authority to prosecute a public official for violating a prisoners constitutional rights. Thus, under Section 242 of the United States Code, This statute makes it a crime for any person acting under color of law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom to leave behindfully deprive or cause to be deprived from any person those rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution and laws of the U. S. (Sec 242 of the United States Code) However, in the same manner as the violation of the Eighth Amendment is difficult to enforce, so is the violation under this statute which requires the injured party to prove that the public officer willfully and intentionally deprived the prisoner of his right. world-wide laws likewise provide ample protection to the shape of prisoners while inside the prison system. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) of which the United States is a signatory clearly provides that all persons deprived of their liberty shall be treated with humanity and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person. Indeed, all these laws affirm the basic principle that even prisoners do have rights under the law. Sexual Abuse in Prison At the outset, it is important to distinguish among the different circumstances of rape that happen within the four corners of the prison.Rape accompanied with violence is one of the more unremarkably known sexual abuses that happen in prison. Ordinarily, when we talk about prison rape, what comes into mind is a gang of prisoners approaching a lone prisoner from tramp and raping him. According to the Department of Justice, in the 2004 alone , an estimated 8,210 allegations of sexual violence were reported by co rrectional authorities the equivalent of 3. 2 allegations per 1,000 inmates and youths incarcerated in 2004. (Almost 2100 sexual violence incidents took place in the nations correctional facilities during 2004)It must be stressed that when rape is accompanied by physical force and violence, things commonly turn out ugly for the rape victim. He may suffer broken neck, dislocated shoulders, hips, and dislocated fingers. Things could get really bloody that there have been inmates who have been recorded to have died after a forcible rape. In an article in Houston Chronicle entitled Mother Probes Sons decease in Prison, Randy Payne a 23 year old white inmate was attacked by a group of about 20 inmates within a week after arriving at the Texas Prison. He later died of head injuries. Allan Turner) Indeed, forcible rape is such a common scenario inside prison that it may happen in any part of the prison. It could take place inside the shower, bathroom, washroom, and in sleeping areas. Forc ible rape must however be distinguished from other holds of sexual abuse that also happens inside prison which is considered as most common and which takes place everyday in prison. This is called the coerced sex. In this scenario, no violence or force takes place but the victim willingly submits to the sexual favors by other inmates. It does not however follow that if sex was not accompanied by force or violence, the inmate has given his consent to have sex with the other inmate. It must be stressed that the prison system is a very coercive environment such that it very difficult to ascertain whether the victim has indeed agreed to consensual sex. This is similar with the vindication obtained by police officers to a crime suspect while the latter is being held under their custody. In the same manner as there could be no voluntary confession in this scenario so is the case of consensual sex among inmates behind bars. The following are the most common reasons why consensual sex is ve ry noble-minded in prison. They explain why it is possible that even if the inmate has submitted himself to sex, the same is still considered as rape. The first is that the inmate becomes indebted to his other inmate because of some needs. Inside prison, there is widespread use of drugs. For some inmates they may not have the money to buy drugs or even food from other inmates. other prisoner feigning to want to befriend this inmate offers him drugs for free. This free offers may include cigarettes, food, water, or even an extra pillow. For some time, this other inmate will make it appear that he merely wants to befriend this other inmate. Later on, he will ask that all these debts be repaid. If the inmate does not have the money then sexual favors might be asked in return. Another scenario is when another inmate poses as a protector of the victim. In this scenario, the group of inmates will set up their victim by threatening the victim with bodily harm and injury. At the point when they are about to hurt their victim, this protector will scare the other group of inmates away. This constant threat he receives from the other groups make the victim fear these inmates. He is then forced to befriend the other inmate who acted as his protector. They later on become close and they become friends. After the frequent protections, the inmate will not ask that his favors be repaid sexually. Male rape is not only a common thing inside prisons, as for female prisoners, the enemy is not their fellow prisoners but much worse. They are the male prison guards and correctional staff. The problem of sexual abuse among women prisoners is much worse precisely because of their sheer number.Research shows that the United States has earned the distinction of incarcerating the most number of prisoners. Most of these prisoners are women and there number is increasing exponentially. According to studies, since 1980, the number of women entering US prisons has risen by almost 400% rough ly double the incarceration rate increase of malesAccording to current estimates, at least half of all female prisoners have experienced some form of sexual abuse prior to incarceration (All Too Familiar Sexual Abuse of Women in State Prisons, 1996)It must be stressed that this form of sexual abuse against female prisoners is worse because here the correctional officials not only become remiss in their duty to protect the inmates but they also violate the moral and legal obligation to them. Also, the male prison guards and correctional staff commit their crime with impunity using not only force but their supreme authority to give these women goods or deny them certain privileges depending on whether they consent to have sex. Lack of Response of Prison Officials The problem of prison rape in our penal institutions is indeed immense.Though there have been high-profile cases involving sexual abuse in prison, this problem is far from being resolved. The fault lies in not just one person or institution but in our indifferent attitude to this problem. Society perhaps may think that convicted prisoners deserve this condition inside prison. Surprisingly we will notice that prison and correctional officials are not severely punished for their transgressions. While some have been found guilty, most of the time, the punishment imposed on correctional officials would involve their reassignment to other penal institution and suspension for up to 30 days. They consider this as an administrative matter. The judicial system which is supposed to protect the oppressed likewise offers no solution to this problem as they would consider this problem as an internal matter and would rather go away prison officials to handle this matter amongst themselves. The indifferent attitude of our correctional officials to one inmate raping another is likewise depressing. Their action on this matter will in general be limited to transferring the prisoner to another penal facility.I rely tha t the problem of sexual abuse will be reduced if not prevented not necessarily by punishing prison officials. The response need not be limited to their strict punishment as avoidance measures may be instituted as a matter of prison policy. Most of the time, this problem happens because the prisoner does not know what to expect in prison. He has no knowledge what happens inside prison and he does not know what to do in case something like this happens. In some states, particularly North Carolina, initiatives have been made to prevent rape by an inmate against another by conducting inmate orientation.Among the topics discussed in this orientation are not only the house rules and the day to day activities of the inmates but also information that rape may happen while they are inside the prison and tips on how to avoid getting rape. They should be prepared on the possible tricks that their fellow inmates may play on them and they should be advised to refuse any offers for food and drugs that they may later on be asked to repay. Secondly, prisoner classification should be given priority by prison officials. It must be stressed that in most prisons the hard core prisoners are compound with first timers. When this happens the new comer becomes easy target by them. Thus, classification of prisoner and separating those newcomers from the others will provide a good alternative against rape. Thirdly, I believe we should start changing our attitudes on the issue of prison rape. This is not just an administrative misconduct but a grave offense. This issue should therefore be addressed seriously and swiftly. If a complaint is received that prison officials has raped an inmate, investigations should be made and he should without delay be prosecuted and criminal charges should be immediately filed.

Sherlock Holmes stories Essay Example for Free

intelligence agent Holmes stories EssayThe Sherlock Holmes stories were first published in strand magazines in the year 1891. The author Conan Doyle, was inspired by other writers including R. L Stevenson, who wrote adventure stories, and Edgar Allen Poe who wrote horror and crime stories. He was also influenced by real events, such as the Jack the Ripper case which was happening at the time. Many people at that time thought it was nosy and disrespectful to read real life stories just almost dead people, so these fictional stories made them feel less guilty. The fictional stories also calm the public because homosexualy real life cases werent solved precisely the Sherlock Holmes cases always were. This gave people hope and made them less scargond. Conan Doyle engages his readers by portraying life in Victorian England in an engaging way. In the man with the twisted lip the reader is introduced to opium dens. Opium was a legal drug at the time of the Victorians. They used to go the little dens underground which wo workforce were deprived of using in that respect were bodies lying in strange fantastic poses, with bowed shoulders and bent knees. Dr Watson said Isa Whitney made good of an opium den in the farthest part of the east of the city. This recorded that Watson virtuously disapproves of these drugs. The fact that they smoked in the east is that they dont want to smoke I an respectable area so the have opiums farthest part of the east of the city. Colonialism was visualized in The Speckled Band as Dr Roylott set up a medical practice in India. Another thing ab come in Victorian clock was the difference in authority and rights, and how the white upper class could easily get away with murder. An example of that was colonialism in the story Dr Roylett killed his native butler who was Indian. nevertheless Dr Roylett was English and people like him were seen as powerful. So when he killed his butler he could easily get away with the capital punishm ent. However if he was an Indian he would have got a death sentence. This is because in the Indian culture who ever murders shall be repaid by being sentenced to death. Britain was as patriarchal society where the men were dominant and the bread-winners, and governed their own families by paternal right. An example is of Dr Roylott, his wife died, and she had left a lot of m iodiney. However the money had to go to his daughters when they marry. That is when the complications happen as Dr Roylott did not want to give the money away.Arthur Conan Doyle indulges and engages his readers into his books, Doyles talent was seen as he was describing his characters in an interesting way, e. g. The Man with the Twisted Lip. Holmes was disguised as an old man and he was very thin. Also much wrinkled bent with age, and an opium pipe dangling between his knees. He went to the opium bar where people drink and smoke cocaine, he thinks that the dens are dark gloomy and socially unpleasant place to b e. This is shown of the sentence approached by a steep flight of steps leading down to a murky gap like the mouth of a cave. Also I open up the latch and made my way into a long, low room, thick and heavy of an emigrant ship. This is strange for the readers as they do not expect a detective that solves mysteries and problems to admit that he also smoke cocaine. Further the author gave Holmes a constitution that surprises readers. He says I suppose that you imagine that I have been addicted opium grass and to cocaine injections. This shows that he has a dual personality. He is deuce sided, smoking cocaine then solving a mystery which is eccentric.Conan Doyle uses contrast in The Red Headed league to represent Holmes, it states and extreme languor to devouring energy. This suggests that one spot Sherlock was tired and lazy, the next he was bursting with energy. Conan Doyle is also good at using sexual send offry. Where it states lust of the chase, that would suddenly come upo n him, this shows that he is passionate about his job and loves it the way a man loves a woman. He also uses effective animal imagery, Hunt down describes him as a vicious as a predator hunting down its prey. Conan Doyle describes settings in an interesting way.In The Red Headed League he uses exaggeration when he says every man who has a shade of red in their hair into the city answered the advertisement. He also uses good personification e. g. fleet street was choked. This is good because the reader knows that Fleet pass is not human because only humans choke when there is too much food consumed so suffocating. However fleet Street choked elbow room it was crowded up with people and hardly any space. This is a good way too keeps the readers engaged and thinking. Color imagery to gives a better image of the scene e. g. Irish setter, brick, liver, clay.So it is not just saying red or blue bricks however adding metaphors. So it is making the reader imagine the colours it their h ead on what it looks like. Conan Doyle also uses a range of similes e. g. court looked like a casters orange barrow it gives the reader a picture on how galore(postnominal) red headed people, its crowded this showed how the court may have looked like. Furthermore he describes the settings of his stories in a way that interest the readers. In the speckled band, as Conan Doyle uses airheaded fallacy. Pathetic fallacy is when nature reflects the mood, like the wind was howling, rain was beating splashing against the window. This is a bit like personification which gives an impression that the weather is horrible, reflecting the awestruck tragedy that is occurring in the house. The weather represented the mood and atmosphere of the scene in the story. The house was described as, the building was of grey, lichen-blotched stone, with a high central potion and dickens curving wings, like the claws of a crab, thrown out on each side, in one of these the windows were broken and blocked wi th wooden boards, while the roof was partly caved in, a picture of ruin. The poor state of the house represents the deterioration and poor mental health of Dr Roylett. The stories are all structured in a alike way. In Sherlock Holmes stories is usually detective work it usually follows as. A client introduces the case to the detectives. In The Speckled Band there are two victims, one already dead, the other, Miss Helen Stoner, fearing for her life. When we first see Miss Helen Stoner in the story, she is dressed in black and heavily veiled. We can tell that she is affright straight away when she talks. The first thing she says is It is not cold which makes me shiver, said the woman in a low voice. It is fear, Mr. Holmes. It is terror. The impact on the reader for this shows just how she was feeling, and how scared she was because she believes that she is going to die like her sister that died two years before. She believes that her sister was either frightened to death or killed b y gypsies, because when this woman Helen found her sister the last words that she said were Helen Oh my God, Helen It was the band The speckled band Next the detective analyses the client to demonstrate their detective skill. This was shown when he observed a train ticket in Mrs. Helen right glove. He also worked out that she took a cart before reaching the station because her jacket was muddy. He worked that one out because he said there is no vehicle save a dog cart which throws mud in that way, and then only when you posture on the left hand side of the driver. This gave Helen stoner a shock as to the series of accurate information. This shows that Sherlock was a bit of a show off demonstrating his extraordinary skills. Being as clever as that is essential for a successful detective. After that the detective visits the crime scene. At night Sherlock went to Dr Roylottes house. He gave the woman set instruction to lock herself in her room so the detectives would sleep in her siste rs room for the night. So Sherlock wanted to study why there is a constant whistle during the night. Holmes investigated the whole house and he build up a plan to catch the murderer. Holmes had found out that there was an air-vent that was inside the house between the sisters room and the stepfathers. Holmes now was in the room that Helen was supposed to be in and suddenly the light was lit in the stepfathers room, and then Sherlock jumped and hit the bell robe under the air-vent which revealed a snake.

Team objectives are very important because it provide the basis for talent and resource planning. Every work can be done properly when there are plans for the work done. The team objectives are the specific goal and the team member role and responsibility is to achieve the goal by effective performance and in a fixed amount of time. So, the relationship between the team objectives and its role and responsibility is very important in an organization. It consists of the right to make decisions and to give order concerning the production, sales or finance related behaviour of subordinates.Line authority is a power to give advice, support and service to line departments. Staff manager dont command others. Line manager are responsible for attaining the organizations goals as efficiently as possible. Line authority flows down the chain of commands. Line authority is the right to carry out assignments and exact performance from other individuals. For example, line authority gives a production supervisor the right to direct an employee to operate a particular machine, and it gives the vice president of finance the right to request a certain report from a department head. Therefore, line authority gives an individual a certain degree of power relating to the performance of an organizational task. (Advameg, Inc, 2010)Line authority is the authority that allows managers to direct others and to make decisions on the organization operations. In the buffet ,line authority is a power to give the authority to the head chef to direct the kitchen staff to prepare the quality food and it gives the authority to floor head to direct the employee whether the customer are happy or satisfy with their service style of the floor staffs or not. If there is any problem related their field, they have the authority about the taking the decision in related field.Line of authority purpose is to help the staff in the process of achieving the goal of the restaurant. Fifteen Gross Sins Are Listed Religion Essay

Fifteen Gross Sins Are Listed Religion EssayBrenda It certainly does. Seriously, though, working at a reference desk has to be a bit intimidating. After all, any oneness is allowed to petition you any question, and you be supposed to be competent to fancy the answer So, I guess one of the qualifications for the labor is that you have to be omniscient That would leave us all go forth. nonwithstanding there is someone who is qualified, someone who knows all the answers. In Revelation 2 and 3, the Naz arne includes in each of the letters to the s heretofore churches the words I know your works. idol knows us. He knows our strengths and our weaknesses. He knows our needs. He knows the answer to every question in our nabt. He is the ultimate reference desk worker.GNBWhat a great immortal we serve and idolization And we on Word Alive ar privileged to be able to sh be the information of theology with you. Thank you for joining us to solar day.Dr Derek Stringer is our commun icator and Derek has been taking us through the amazing letter of capital of Minnesota to the Galatians. Weve reached the fifth chapter and rhymes 19 to 21.DSAnd I hope that youll non be put off if I say that this information is some of the most discouraging in the unblemished Bible, scarcely also one of the most authenticistic.GNBLets look at Galatians 519 to 21 The acts of the abuse-doingful spirit be obvious knowledgeable immorality, impurity and debauchery idolatry and witchcraft hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not land the kingdom of God.DerekDSBrenda, thank you.On the surface it is hard to imagine any liaison more depressing and discouraging than these three verses. Fifteen gross sins ar listed, followed by a bullnecked warning that those who execute much(prenominal) sins will not inherit the kingdom of God.GNBAnd some of you may be wondering, Is he originally freeing to devote an entire message to these three verses? Why not combine them with the next three, which speak of the fruit of the Spirit. Then at least something uplifting and positive might result.DSWell, were going to restore to verses 22-23 next time, and I intend after enduring the sourness of todays text, the fruit of the Spirit will taste much sweeter. Before take into the detail, however, I think there are a few general observations we need to mark by way of an overview of the SIN or the S.I.N. Virus that stands for mischievously IN NEED virusFirst, I want us to consider why Paul included this list of sins here in the book of Galatians. iodine reason seems to me to be an issue of balance.Pauls strong advocacy of aggrandize as a life principle and his severe attacks against legalism could lead some to take sin lightly. These verses enable him to communicate not only that there are moral principles even for those living under grace, barely also that persistent violation of the boundaries God has set, has severe, even eternal consequences. Some old writers knew the truth of this.Thomas Merton for exampleThe reason we never enter into the deepest reality of our relationship with God is that we so seldom acknowledge our utter nothingness before Him.GNBAs George MacDonaldTo be ashamed is a holy and b slighted thing. Shame is shame only to those who want to appear, not to those who want to be. Shame is shame to those who want to pass their examination, not to those who would get to the heart of things. To be humbly ashamed is to be plunged in the cleansing tub of truth.DSAnd then In addition, it is one thing to know in general that there is a conflict between the immoral nature and the Spirit. It is quite an other thing to be given a list of fifteen specific examples of the acts of the foul nature and then a list of the fruit of the Spirit. God doesnt leave us wondering ab bug out the real difference between a life lived after the flesh and one lived after the Spirit.Furthermore, all of us are interested enough in saving face that, without such a list we would tend to think of the acts of the loathsome nature only in terms of deeds we personally have not committed. And we would focus only on the fruit of the Spirit that seem to have counterparts in our own personalities. besides these lists force us to face the fact that everyone of us has an active criminal nature, and everyone of us has room for major cultivation of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. as well by way of overview I think we should take melody of Pauls comment to the effect that The acts of the sinful nature are obvious. Obvious to whom? Apparently to anyone who is objective and honest.GNBIn the past 25 years our modern culture has made great efforts to deny that many of these acts are even wrong. (sinful, of course, is not even in the cultures vocabulary). informal activity outside of mar riage, for example, is considered by many modern psychotherapists, politicians, and even clergy to be perfectly acceptable. Standards not acceptable a few years ago are now routinely labelled a inseparable alternative lifestyle. Those who chain reactor with drug addiction and alcoholism insist their clients are merely suffering from a disease.DS scarce the Scriptures deem all such behaviour to be acts of the sinful nature, (though certainly sin can, and often does, lead to disease). The media treats astrology as a harmless and perhaps even helpful way for people to find order in a chaotic world, only when Paul says it, in any case, is an act of the sinful nature. Even we evangelicals play this game when we consider jealousy, envy, and a bad temper to be minor indiscretions or personality flaws we careen help, while God lumps such things together with idolatry and orgies, and calls them all the acts of the sinful nature. You know we can rightify, excuse, and rationalise all we want, but despite all our efforts to hide the truth, the acts of the flesh are obvious. No matter how we dress them up, they are sin, and we know it in our hearts.GNBNow lets take the time to examine the acts of the sinful nature one by one, as enumerated by the Apostle.DS at that place are 15 deeds mentioned here in the NIV, 17 in the KJV, which adds adultery and murder. These two are not found in the oldest Greek manuscripts of our text and were credibly added by a later scribe who thought two sins as nasty as adultery and murder for sure deserved a place in Pauls list. The list, of course, was not loadedt to be exhaustive, and whether or not Paul himself wrote adultery and murders, he undoubtedly included them in the et cetera at the end of the list. As a matter of fact, virtually the entire Ten Commandments are missing from this list, though they also certainly deal with notorious acts of the sinful nature.Bible scholars often divide this list into four parts sexual sins, relig ious sins, social sins, and sins related especially to alcohol.GNBThere are the sexual sins.DSThe first vice in the list is Immorality. The Greek word used here is the term porneia, from which we get our English word, pornography. It is a broad term which signifies sexual perversion in general. Almost any sexual act outside marriage would be included. Sin of this kind was so common in Pauls day that it was almost taken for granted. Even guessrs were not particularly shocked by it. I fear that we are fast approaching the same degree of stolidity to sexual looseness in our own day.We are living in a sex-saturated society. Most major television programmes are built around a theme of sexual promiscuity, to say nothing of the best-seller list of fiction books or leading magazines or Oscar-nominated movies. And all this is impacting the church.I remember a magazine separate entitled, Sex and the Single Evangelical. It contends the church is in denial about how its single evangelicals a re having sex (which may be true), but then she goes on to mention that the prohibition on premarital sex is just a church tradition, and is essentially unaddressed in Scripture. Frankly, I dont know how they can square that with the full tenor of Scripture, to say nothing of specific passages like 1 Corinthians 6.However, with all these voices out there advocating sexual freedom, plus our inherent tendency toward the desires of the sinful nature, there is virtually no doubt there are individuals listening to me today who are right now living a double life of faith on Sunday and immorality during the week. Perhaps there is someone who is presently carrying on an affair with a colleague at work. Almost certainly in a group as large as the group listening to me right now well there are some caught in the vice-grip of wrong actions. I would not even be surprised if there is a parent who is sexually abusing a child or a stepchild. beguile, please dont bring in to be shocked-if th is happened at Corinth and at Galatia, then it also happens at our Church. But while acknowledging the fact that it is happening, we dare not take a blas positioning toward it. Please be informed that those who send such things, according to this very passage, shall not inherit the kingdom of God. They are not destined for heaven. Thats what God says. But peradventure some of you have never been guilty of an explicit sexual sin. You are still not necessarily off the hook. For the second vice mentioned is Impurity. It refers to a filthiness of heart and mind that corrupts and defiles a person. The impure person sees dirt in everything.GNBDouble-entendres are his forte. He is described in Titus 115 To the pure, all things are pure. But to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. The impure person is also described in 2 Peter 214 as one having eyes full of adultery.DSYou know Many Christian men who wouldnt think of having an actual affair, as yet think nothing of walking down the street with their eyes at breast level. We men in particular need to be so circumspect what we read, what we watch, and especially what websites we visit on the computer. If you find yourself susceptible to temptation, flee as Joseph did. A unproblematic way to flee profits temptation is to use an internet provider with an adequate filtering system. But women, too, are not exempt. Filling your minds with romance novels and soap operas are equivalent to saturating yourself with impurity. If its filthy, its not of the Spirit its an act of the sinful nature, and those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.The third vice in the sexual area, Debauchery or sensuality is a broad term covering everything from provocative clothing to shameless disregard for public decency.Sensuality is the byword for the bulk of advertising done in our country today. The clothing constancy thrives on it, as does the en tertainment industry, the travel industry, and the music industry. In denouncing sensuality, Paul is not suggesting that beauty and attractiveness are out of bounds for Christian people. But everyone of us knows in our hearts the difference between beauty and sensuality-its the difference between Michelangelos statue of David and the Playgirl centrefold. You can stand next to that incredible statue of David in Florence, in the forepart of dozens of men, women, and children, with no sense of shame-only awe. It exudes beauty, not sensuality.GNBPauls first three entries among the acts of the sinful nature should not be interpreted as implying a negative attitude toward sex.DSThats so right Sexuality is God-given and beautiful, but when exercised outside the bounds of marriage, it can be incredibly self-destructive. And those who practice sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery (or sensuality) shall not inherit the kingdom of God.GNBNext there are the religious sins.DSIdolatry.Ther e are many places in the Bible where idolatry is ridiculed.GNBIn the forty-fourth chapter of Isaiah the prophet says, All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. . . . He cuts down cedars, or perhaps a cypress or oak. . . . Half of the forest he burns in the fire over it he prepares his meal, he roasts his meat and eats his fill. He also warms himself and says, Ah I am warm I see the fire. From the rest he makes a god, his idol he bows down to it and pietys. He prays to it and says, Save me you are my god. They know nothing. They understand nothing their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds closed so they cannot understand.DSBut the worship of idols involves not only graven images but also any reservation for the living and true God.GNBIn Colossians 35 covetousness is described as a form of idolatry, because the thing coveted becomes an object of worship.DSThe Christian who devotes more of himself to his car, house or boat t han he does to serving Christ may be in danger of idolatry. We are commanded in Scripture to worship God, love people, and use things but too often we use people, love self, and worship things, leaving God completely out of the picture. The outstanding thing to note here is that false worship is every bit as much a work of the sinful nature as adultery. And those who practice idolatry shall not inheritthe kingdom of God.The second religious act of the sinful nature is Witchcraft or sorcery. The Greek word Paul uses here is the one from which we get out English word pharmacy. It referred to the use of drugs to poison people, as well as in witchcraft. Magic and sorcery were extremely common in Asia Minor, where the Galatian churches were located.GNBIn Acts 1919 we read that due to Pauls ministry in nearby Ephesus, A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the thoroughgoing came to fifty th ousand drachmas.DSThe Bible forbids anything related to magic, fortune-telling, astrology or contact with the spirit world. Perhaps a specific comment relative to astrology and horoscopes would be in order, since many people are conned into thinking it is a harmless and sometimes even helpful way to plan for the future and to make decisions. At best it is a foolish waste of time and bills. More often it is a subtle trap that Satan uses to undermine ones faith in Gods active sovereignty over human affairs. At worst it makes one vulnerable to demonic influences.GNBLet me quote just one of many passages in the Bible that speak to this issue. Im reading from Deuteronomy 18 When you enter the land the Lord your God is better-looking you, do not learn to imitate the offensive slipway of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who . . .practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.DSThose who practice idolatry and witchcraft or sorcery will not inherit the kingdom of God. So much for the religious sins. The social sins are more numerous. If the first two categories didnt get you, then this one probably will, for the vices listed here are very common, even among professing Christians. But theyre no less serious just because theyre common.Hatred refers to hostility between individuals or communities, whether on social, political, racial, or religious grounds. The attitude of those who stir up racial hatred is here. So is hatred for gays, for abortionists, and even for politicians. One can dis go strongly with a persons view or lifestyle, but hatred of that person is forbidden. The second act of the sinful nature that fits in the social realm, or perhaps I should say anti-social realm is Discord. This is the natural result when hatred is acted upon. Whether the discord occurs in Northern Ireland or Jerusal em or London, it is the end result of hatred.GNBSome homes are characterised by discord, as the hatred and contempt of one family member for another boils over in fighting and feuding.DSBut interestingly, four out of the six times Paul uses this word in his epistles, it is connected with church life. Some churches, unfortunately, are characterised by strife. Fights and splits are typical fare, and the world watches and wonders, Is this what Christianity is all about?I prayed all my ministry life that God would spare the church I pastored from the discord that leads to a church split. God was gracious and answered that prayer. The next act mentioned is the word Jealous. And its not always a vice. In fact, God is called a jealous God in the Scriptures and even gives as one of His names, Jealous.GNBAnd we are urged to be jealous for Gods honour and for Gods name.DSBut here it is obvious the intention is to speak of selfish jealousy, that attitude which resents the success enjoyed by som eone else. This, too, occurs in the church, when one person is asked to do a ministry that someone else wanted, or when one member has an unusual degree of success in business. Then there are Fits of rage.Losing ones temper and blowing a gasket are not excusable because your hair is red or because someone around you is especially teasing or because thats just the way you are. Its a work of the sinful nature, and those that practice outbursts of anger shall not inherit the kingdom of God.Another act of the sinful nature in social situations is Selfish ambition. The term used here signifies a mercenary spirit which withholds ministry or service from someone if there isnt enough money in it. Pastors who choose speaking engagements solely on the basis of where the larger honoraria are given are guilty of this vice.GNBA cartoon in lead Journal years ago showed a Christian musician standing before an adoring audience about to sing a beautiful worship song he had written himself. The capti on has him saying something like this The Lord gave me this song, and if anyone uses it without my permission, Ill sue you.DSA spirit of selfish ambition, to be sure. But so is the attitude of a layperson who refused to serve in the church because it would interfere with his moneymaking ability. The next word is Dissensions. Its a term with strong doctrinal overtones, and refers principally to the introduction of dissentious teaching in the church.GNBThe legalists in Galatia were a prime example.DSAnd there are many in the church today who are teaching doctrines, some absolutely false and others just distortions, which keep people from focusing on truths that exalt Christ and build up believers. In fact, I believe even solid truth can sometimes be taught in a way that produces dissension. The doctrine of election, for example, is a doctrine I highly value, but if it is not taught carefully, it can be unnecessarily divisive. The next word (Number 12) is Factions. It goes a step further than dissensions. In fact, it is the natural result of divisive teaching, in that a party spirit develops and the Body of Christ is split into groups-one of which champions a particular teacher or leader, while another champions someone else.GNBPaul experienced this in Corinth, where he chided the church with these wordsOne of you says, I follow Paul another, I follow Apollos another, I follow Cephas still another (and this was the super-spiritual group), I follow Christ. Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptised into the name of PaulDSI believe cliques are a common demonstration of this vice of factions. Oh, how we need to be careful not to isolate ourselves with our little group of friends Nothing will destroy the spirit of unity in a church more quickly.Young people, this includes you. Sometimes youth groups are extremely difficult for new kids to break into because of the cliques that exist. Its an act of the sinful nature.Next Envy is closely related to the earlier concept of jealousy, only this term, in contrast to jealousy, is always negative. It is the grudging spirit that cannot bear to contemplate someone elses prosperity.GNBChrist gave a fabrication in which some of the workmen complained that the last-hired worker had been over- generously paid. The owner of the vineyard replied, Do you begrudge my generosity?DSThose guilty of envy do indeed.Having examined the social sins that deal with interpersonal relations, lets consider two that are common to drinking alcohol.Drunkenness is excessive indulgence in alcohol, which weakens ones rational and moral control over actions and words. There is undoubtedly less excuse for the abuse of alcohol in our society today than even in the Galatian society of the first century, for drinking wine in those days was almost essential, whereas today it is always by choice. No one today has to drink at all-the alternatives are numerous and often more healthy. The simple reason why abuse of alc ohol is such a problem today is social pressure. Too many people think theyll stick out like a sore thumb if they ask for a soft drink. But, you ask, cant one drink without abuse? Certainly, and many do. Drinking is not in itself a spiritual issue-drunkenness is-but drinking is certainly a social issue that must be examined carefully by Christian people. Many need to ask the question, Is the minor enhancement of life that moderate use of alcohol provides worth the major risk of abuse that so subtly and frequently results? Remember that those who practice drunkenness will not inherit the kingdom of God.Then he mentions Orgies or carousings which often accompany drunkenness. In fact, rarely, do these occur without alcohol, for the lowering of ones natural inhibitions with alcohol is generally a pre-requisite before most people will even participate in grossly immoral behaviour.GNBFifteen vices have been listed.DSBut then the Apostle adds an et cetera, for in verse 21 he ends his list wit h the phrase, and the like. What he doesnt want us to do is to think of the acts of the sinful nature just in terms of these 15 vices, with the implication that if you avoid all 15 of these, youve got it made spiritually. These are only representative of the kinds of actions that generate from our natural, in-born tendency toward sin.GNBWe need to hear this even if its tough to do so its information from the Word of God here on Word Alive with Dr Derek Stringer. And we must also evaluate the acts of the sinful nature. And Derek will be hold in a moment to help us do just that.I just want to take this probability to let you know that we are praying for you our listener. If we can be of help spirituality well thats what were here for. Word Alive is not just about giving biblical information but seeing it lead to spiritual transformation. I give you our contact details in just a moment but let me hand the microphone over to Derek Stringer as he wraps up this teaching from Galatians 519 to 21. Over to DerekDSThanks again Brenda. What we find at the conclusion of the Apostles list is a severe warning. I warn you, he says, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.The first thing we should ask is this To whom is this warning addressed? Well, theres no question that Paul is talking to the professing Christians who were members of the churches of Galatia. Most of them were probably genuine believers, but as in any church, there were undoubtedly some who were just going through religious motions. Many of these church members had come to Christ out of paganism, where their lives had been controlled by sinful habits. Some of them had practiced fornication as a religious duty in the pagan temples. Sorcery had been as common as weather forecasting. Naturally, not all of these nasty habits disappeared overnight when they professed faith in Christ. Some struggled with particular sinful addictions, or at least temptations, for some t ime.I would like to suggest that it was because some of these former pagans were struggling that the Judaizers had been so successful in introducing their legalism into the churches.I can just hear them say, You Galatians have tried grace as a way of conquering your baser instincts but the only sure way of putting a lid on sin is going back under the Law of Moses Paul, of course, disagrees strongly that the Law has any power to conquer such habits, but instead of reiterating what he has already shared as the real answer (namely the life of grace as it is walked in the power of the sanctum sanctorum Spirit), he hits them with a stunning warning, namely that the Kingdom of God is not going to be populated by people who commit immoral deeds, hate other people, lose their tempers, or get drunk. Now, if youre a normal, intelligent and inquisitive person, you probably are not willing to let the matter lie with that simple statement of Pauls theology. For numerous questions invade ones min d as to the meaning of this severe warning.Does this verse teach that anyone who has ever committed one immoral act or gotten smashed or acted jealously is excluded forever from Heaven?Or rather that those who do such things after conversion are excluded?Or that those who do such things and refuse to repent are excluded?Or that those who practice such things continually are excluded?Probably most of us would tend to choose the latter option, because we are anxious to preserve one of our favourite doctrines-the security of the believer. I too agree with the last option, but not for that reason. The Apostle is, in my estimation, fighting the very common tendency to divorce morality from religion.GNBThere are many who feel that whats eventful is just what people believe, not how they behave.DSOne or two of you may have even thought thats what I believe, for probably no few than a dozen times over the past programmes I have stated, We are saved by believing, not by achieving. Yes, I sa id that, and I believe that, but I never said that behaviour is unimportant-just that it can never save you.Anyone who thinks he can run around on his wife, get drunk at every office party, and practice road rage every night, and still go to Heaven so long as his beliefs are orthodox, has missed Pauls point regarding our freedom in Christ completely.A Christian should never view his relationship with God as a free just the ticket to sin, but rather as a compulsion to forsake sin. Both our beliefs and our behaviour are important to God, and we dare not divorce them.In fact, we cant divorce them, even if we try.GNBWe behave the way we behave because we believe the way we believe.DSI think thats true. If we live sinful lives its because we really dont believe God hates sin and that He will some day judge those who do it. We may say we believe it, but we really dont. Now its very important to pay attention to the verb used in v. 21GNBthose who live like this.DSThe word is in the present tense and is used often to mean practice. This passage says that one whose life is characterized by these acts of the sinful nature will not inherit Gods Kingdom. It doesnt matter what profession he has made. It doesnt matter what aisles he has walked or at what altars he has kneeled. It doesnt matter what spiritual experiences he has had or even whom he may have led to Christ. If these kinds of deeds describe his life-style, then he will not inherit the Kingdom of God, Thus says the Lord. His attitudes and actions contradict the profession he makes that he has experienced the saving grace of God and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.Would that when we meet one of these severe warnings of Scriptures we would not immediately ask, How does this fit with eternal security?, but rather respond as Jesus disciples did when told that one of them would let on Him, Lord, is it I? Lord, are you talking about me?Finally, I would like to mention just a couple of implications of this se vere warning.First, I do not believe anyone whose life is characterised by these acts of the sinful nature has the luxury of claiming to be a Christian. I am not the one to judge whether hes saved, lost, or just backslidden, but I do say that he has no right to claim hes a child of God when his life denies it. I have had individuals contact me, who were at the time living in gross sin, tell me, Well, at least I know Im a Christian. And I have had to say, Im sorry, but I think thats blasphemy. You have no right to make such a claim while youre living like that.A final implication is that while the entire book of Galatians has emphasised that we cannot inherit Gods kingdom by works, verse 21 says in effect that we can bar ourselves from Gods kingdom by works. Good works, in other words, cant get you into heaven, but works of the sinful nature can send you to Hell. All around us are evil influences gruelling to drown us in the actions of the sinful nature. But I find hope offered to us in the Word of God.BrendaGNBIn a very identical passage in 1 Corinthians 6 this same Apostle wrote, Dont you know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy no drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.DSNotice the tense of that verb when he says, And that is what some of you were. Paul would never have written, And that is what some of you are, for Christian adulterer is an oxymoron so is Christian thief and Christian drunk. But the use of the past tense shows that God can turn people around. The greatest thing about Christianity is that a personal relationship with Christ can turn a mans present habits into history. There is no life t oo gross and too filled with the acts of the sinful nature that Jesus Christ cant make a past tense out of it. The only person unredeemable is the one whose heart is too proud to seek Gods forgiveness.GNBAre you one who is in need of the warning of this Scripture passage today?DSYes Are you, as one who professes to be a Christian, involved in practicing one or more of these sins listed here? If so, your ultimate concern should not be to debate whether you real

The Relationship Between Political Democracy And Economic Growth Economics Essay

The Relationship between Political Democracy And Economic Growth Economics EssayThe relationship between semipolitical country and frugal produce has been a center of debate in the past fifty years. A corpus of cross-country enquiry has visualizen that the theoretical divide on the impact of republi throw out versus authoritarian regimes on fruit is matched by ambiguous semiempirical results, resulting in a consensus of an inconclusive relationship. Through this piece challenges this consensus. In contrast to the current consensus, we show that once the microscope of analysis is applied to the accumulated march, it is possible to draw some(prenominal) firm and robust conclusions regarding democracy and scotch harvest.Supporter of democracy argue that the motivations of citizens to litigate and invest, the pay forwardive allocation of resources in the marketplace, and profit maximizing private activity ordure all be maintained in a climate of liberty, forgive-flo take flight instruction and secured control of property ( North, 1990). Democracies can limit state intervention in the economy, ar responsive to publics demands on atomic number 18a such as education, justice and health, and elevate stable and ache run growth (Rodrik, 1999, Lake and Baum 2001, Baum and Lake 2003). Opponents of democracy, on the other hand, argue that democracies lend themselves to popular demand for immediate consumption at the expense of gainful investments, can non be insulated from the interest of rent-seekers, and can non mobilize resource swiftly. Democracies are said withal to be prone to fights due to social, ethnic and class struggles. While some authors promote authoritarian regime to suppress conflicts, resist sectional interests and take coercive measures necessary for rapid growth, others remain overall unbelieving on whether regimes, quite a than markets and institutions, bearing bulge for growth (Bhagwati 1995).Actually, there are million s of journal articles on the internet regarding to the topic of democracy and stinting growth, and in order to get those articles, Google scholars and others journal websites are apply to download those to read. Moreover, I use the snowball technic to keep on trace of the best sources. For example, when I found the best source, I realize at its references, and wherefore I followed the old references or foot nones of each(prenominal) best source to get more best sources. Since some journals are not free for download, I somehow need to spend money on the journal website in order to get the sources. Moreover, in term of getting best sources from the Google or Google scholar, I typed the only the key words of the topic of research. For instance, instead of using scotch growth, I can use economic development, or Gross nation products of each nation. What is more, in order to limit the number of sources on the net, I used the quotation mark, plus sign, or equal sing around the word finding. Importantly, redden there are a lot of website that can provide the best convincing information regarding to the topic, I still looked and priority on the famous websites forward selecting the sources.Mean eyepatch of the finding and selecting the best sources, I scanned all the sources to get the overall ideas-what those resources mean to the readers, and in specific skill of selecting the best sources, I just looked the scam part, and jumped to the conclusion. By doing that, I can pretty sure that I can comprehend what the papers want to be told. Then, I look at those finding, methodologies, limitation, and word of honor sections to essay, find the strength and weakness, and to novice them in the right ways. Of course, even the general knowledge of the researchers seem to be so higher(prenominal) than me, and in order to critic them, I need to read what the fallacy of the research are. For example, some researchers might give their own judgments which cannot be appl ied in some extend, and some see only in the present by ignoring the past.Beside this, in order to produce this paper, first of all, I need to do a lot of extensive interpret on the found sources to select the best source. During the reading, I a uniform quoted regarding to the theme which I was prepared on the duration of literature reviewing. Once I had through all the reading, I started to type all the important information to each belonging theme or coding, then I read those information which came from numerous antithetic scholars to get the common sense of idea on one particular point, so by doing it back and forth with a serious attention, Finally, I can produce this research paper which can summary all the main ideas of the existed sources.thitherfore, this paper presents an analysis on the democracy-growth relationship, based on 10 produce studies. It is an important step to addressing the deadlock on the democracy growth relationship. The literature need such as urg ent comprehensive assessment on the topic in the wake of massive democratizations for many developing countries. Reviews of this literature and many authors who build contributed to it, state that the association is inconclusive. Faced with a diverse set of remote results, they are unable to conclude whether the association is positive, prohibit or non-existent. We find that once all the available evidence is considered, holding research design differences constant, the evidence does not point to democracy having a detrimental impact on growth. Moreover, this critic paper allow be able to conclude that the force is not inconclusive. There is, indeed, a zero direct effect of democracy on growth. Second, democracy has a momentous positive indirect effect on growth through humans capital accumulation. In addition, democracies are associated with lower inflation, reduced political instability and higher levels of economic granting immunity. However, there is some evidence tha t they are associated also with larger government and more restrictive international trade. Third, there are region-specific set up on the democracy-growth relationship. Particularly, the growth effects of democracy are higher in Latin America and Lower in Asia. This research paper also that much of the variation in results between studies does not reflect historical underlying differences in the democracy-growth association Rather it is owing to either sampling error or the research design process.Raresh Kumar Narayan and Russell Smyth. Democracy and economic growth main shore china Evidence from counteraction and causality testing. Review of Applied economics, Vol. 2, No, 1, (2006) 81-89 To examine the relationship between the democracy and economic growth in the peoples Republic of China over the last three decades. Actually, China represents an interesting matter in the debate over the relationship between the democracy and growth. This study was used the short and long run effect of democracy on the china within a production function framework by following the methods of error correction mechanism, and granger Causality tests-testing between the labor and capital, and most studies by economist have tested for correlation between democracy and economic growth and have break offed to adequately address the issue of causation, and using the Granger causality tests to explore the effects of shocks of democracy and economic growth beyond the sample period through the use of variance decomposition analysis and impulse response functions. While labor and capital can defined the core relationship between democracy and economic growth, existent gross domestic product and income of people are also the factors, and this study found out the democratization in China is impossible, and it can be true since the China never experience of being democracy. Moreover, economic growth of china is not because of democracy theories, but its own political culture, and its own indigenous development model. Meanwhile, real income and real GDP of each nations are also the factors for democracy growth too.Actually, according to Paresh Kumar Narayan, and Russell Smyth. (2007), who conducted the similar studies, examined the relationship between the democracy and economic growth in 30 Sub-Saharan African counties, sustenanceed the Lipset hypothesis. This study used the real GDP Granger to explore the cause of democracy and an increase in GDP results in an improvement in democracy. In the long run democracy Granger causes real income and an increase in democracy has a positive effect on real income, which is found for Bostwana with the freedome house data and for Madagascare, Rwanda, South Africa, and Swaziland. However, Hristos Doucouliagos and Mehment Ulubasoglu.( 2006). Democracy and Economic Growth A Meta-Analysis. School Working paper-economic series 2006 Deakin University. This research paper is to explore the inconclusive relationship through a quan titative assessment of the democracy growth literature and use meta-regression as the methodology to analysis by collecting all the existed literature review to conclude the impact of democracy on economic. The strength point of this study was that this study concerned many multivariate at the same time. For example, it looked beyond the theories, the democracy in the past and the present, and so on.In addition, Elias Papaioannou and Gregorios Siourounis. (2004). Democratization and Growth. Job market paper London line of work school. This research study challenges the empirical finding that parliamentary institution has direct effect on economic growth by using the before-after event study approach, and dogmatic the permanent democratization in the specific time. The strength of this study is that it study the long trend, omit the unrelevent variable, and observe the change from one time to other time of the variable affecting the democracy, but the weakness of this research ar ticle was that it didnt distinguish between different types of autocracy for example left or right wing dictatorship and democracy -presidential or parliamentary.Noam, L and Kanta, Murali. ( 2009). Does economic development explain elected development?. Annual meeting at the Midwest political learning association. This study explore the relationship between economic and democracy by using the modernization theories to analysis, and observing those change over time. The finding of this study seems to be able to apply for the new current democracy system, but it lacked of concerning about the democratization process in the past. This research study have found out the when there is economic growth, the democratization process will come as salubrious, and according to my perspective, this self-reliance can be true since when one country has a high economic growth, that nation will prioritize on the domestic affair, freedom and the growth rate of the middle class. Moreover, the long er period of time, there will be positive effect of democracy, democratization growth, and economic development.Christian. H. ( 2010). Inequality, Economic development and democratization. University of Rochester. This research concerned about the inequality, income distribution of the economic sphere and took that variable to analyze the relationship between democracy and economic growth. However, this study focused on two theories-modernization and inequality theories, which was quite similar to Noam, L and Kanta, Murali. ( 2009). The strength assumption of this study was that when there is economic growth, autocracies more or less(prenominal) will change their political system as well in some extend, but this assumption also failed since some rich autocracies are not more likely to become democratic ( Przeworski and Limongi 1997 Prazewoki et al. 2000). Moreover, this study concluded that democracy inequality harms democratization. Of course, in the case of some nations, when ther e is class tension-between the level of middle class, there will be social clash, which lead to autocratic state more than democracy. What is more, this study fail to analyze other variable beside income inequality since economic crisis, the complexity of democracy system are also the cause of authoritarian shift. The availability of data and econometric techniques enables all the researchers to investigate these issues empirically. However, the empirical findings span a continuum of negative, insignificant and positive estimates, creating a conundrum. For instance, the distribution of results that we have compiled from 470 regression estimates from 10 democracy-growth studies shows that 16% of the estimates are negative and statistically significant, 20% of the estimates are negative and statistically insignificant, 38% of the estimate are positive and statistically insignificant, and 26% of the estimates are positive and statistically significant. This can be implied that three-qua rters of the regressions have not been able to find the desired positive and significant sign. It also implies that around half of the regression models have found statistically significant estimates while the other half found statistically insignificant estimates. Such different results are not surprising because research question represent are narrow and approach the issue from different dimensions. For instance, while certain studies focus on the physical investment channel between democracy and growth, others look at the human capital or political instability channels. Likewise, certain studies present structural estimates of a well-defined model, whereas other focus on the empirical regularities in the data. Thus, the question is perplexed with a continuum of estimates, which differ due to data sources, estimate methodologies, sample composition, and time periods. The structure of this paper will be followed by the brief review of the key theoretical arguments behind a democrac y-growth association, the effect of democracy on economic, the effect of economic on democracy, and conclusion of the research paper. a priori ArgumentsTraditional perspectiveDoes political democracy cause the economic growth? To Hobbes (1651), absolutist regimes were more likely to improve public welfare simply because they could not promote their own interests otherwise. Similarly, Huntington (1968) also argues that democracies have weak and sparse political institutions and lend themselves to popular demands at the expense of profitable investments. Democratic governments are insecure to demands for redistribution to lower-income groups, and are surrounded by rent-seekers for directly unproductive profit-seeking activities (Krueger 1974, Bhagwati 1982). Non-democratic regimes can implement the hard economic policies necessary for growth, and suppress the growth-retarding demands of low-income earners and labor in general, as well as social instabilities because of ethnic, relig ious, and class struggles, and Democracies cannot suppress such conflicts. In term of economic progress, markets should come first and authoritarian regimes can more or less easily facilitate such policies. Moreover, some level of development is a pre-requisite for democracy to function properly ( Lipsets 1959 hypothesis). In short, this view implies that political democracy is a best product that cannot be afforded by developing countries. Other proponents of the conflict view and stricter state command on the economy include Galenson (1959), Andreski (1968), Huntington and Dominguez (1975), Rao (19884-5) and Haggard (1990).The conflict view became more debatable after the growth success stories in South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore in the 1950s and 1960s. The argument rest on several assumptions, the main one of which is that if given power, authoritarian regimes would behave in a growth-friendly manner. In that regard, server contrasting cases are provided where dictato rs pursued their own welfare and failed in Africa and the Socialist world ( de Haan and Sirermann 1995, Alesina et al. 1996).Proponents of democracy, on the other hand, argue that rulers are potential looters (Harrington 1656) and democratic institutions can act to constrain them. Most of the assumptions of the conflict view can be refuted with good reasons. Implementation of the rule of law, contract enforcement and protection property rights do not necessarily imply an authoritarian regime. In addition, Bhagwati (1995) argues that democracies rarely require in military conflict with each other, and this promotes world peace and economic growth. They are also more likely to provide less volatile economic performance. Finally, de Haan and Siermann (1995) note that a strong state and an authoritarian state are not the same thing. However, markets can deliver growth under both democratic and authoritarian regimes. The modern perspectiveActually, the political democracy-growth can be s een more precise and focused today. Theory has moved away from traditional conflict with compatibility arguments, because different aspects of the broader institutions-growth problem have been identified. For instance, many researchers have separated economic democracy from political democracy. Factors like protection of property rights, business, credit and labor market regulation, which were antecedently attributed to political democracy, are now being treated as part of economic democracy. Analysis of economic freedom indicators from the Fraser institute ( by Gwartney and Lawson 1996, 2000, 2003) and the heritage entry ( by ODriscoll et al. 2003) has shown that economic freedom, with also its other aspects, is equally relevant to growth. Recently, the world bank introduced the Doing Business aspect of institutions problem. In particular Djankov et al ( 2002a, 200b, 2005), Djankov, McLeish and Shleifer (2005), and Botero et al (2004) benchmarked business regulations and quantifi ed the easiness of private sectors activity in the economics based on labor hiring and firing practices ease of starting, registering and closing business protecting investors and enforcing contracts and dealing with pass and paying taxes. At this point one may feel that dissecting these aspect from political democracy reduce its scope to multi-party and free election only. Of course, political democracy is more than free and fair elections. First, empirical evidence shows that all the aspects of the institutions made precise above, i.e., economic democracy, governance and private sphere in the economy have high correlations with political democracy. In other words, the mere existence of participatory democracy implies the broader institutions tributary to growth.Secondly, various studies find that political democracy has enormous indirect effects on growth through human capital accumulation, income distribution, and political stability. In addition, Sturn and de Haan (2001) find t hat the presence of democracy in a country positively affects the level of economic freedom. Thus, on the question of political democracy and growth, one should remember the broader associations that encompass the channels, or the indirect effects, between democracy and growth rather than one to one causation from regime to growth.Thirdly, as Bhagwati( 1995) and Rodrik (2000) point out, democracies provide higher quality growth through various means. Rodirk puts it in the following way participatory democracies enable a higher-quality growth by allowing greater predictability and stability in the long run, by being stronger against external shocks, and by delivering better distributional outcomes. Democratic institutions would help market function perfectly, as is assumed in neoclassical economic models. As an extension to such argument, the volatility channel has also been shown to be an important indirect effect of democracy on growth. Non democratic regimes are not a unvarying l ot ( de Haan and Siermann, 1995, Alesina et al. 1996, Alesina and Perotti 1994), whereas democracies are more homogenous and can provide stable economic progress.Effect of democracy on GrowthSirowy and Inkeless (1990) suggest that there are three major views on the effects of democracy on growth with their label the conflict, and the compatibility and the skeptical. The conflict thesis suggests that democracy and economic growth are incompatible because elected officals longing for popular blessing make shortsighted decisions designed to maximize whose objective is to divert resources from productive activities in favor of immediate consumption. Related arguments are that democracy is less conducive to long term stability (world Bank, 1991, pp. 132-133) or long term development ( Barro, 1996) because of the tendency in majority voting systems to enact rich to poor redistribution of income including land reforms. On the other hand, the compatibility thesis proffers that democratic fe atures such as political pluralism, institutional checks and balances and freedom of the press provide safeguards against system abuse or predatory behavior often associated with authoritarian regimes. Friedman (1962) was one of the first to suggest that economic and political freedoms are mutually reinforcing. He postulated that an expansion in political freedom fosters economic freedoms such as secure property rights and certainty of contract, which, in turn, underpin higher rates of economic growth. As Barro( 1996) argues, of course there is secret code in principle preventing non-democratic governments from promoting economic freedoms. Examples of autocracies which have increased economic freedom include the Pinochet regime in chile and the Fujimora government in Peru. The point, though, made by advocates of the compatibility thesis is democracy is more likely to be conducive to promoting economic freedoms than authoritarianism because the political legitimacy and therefore lo ng term survival of a democracy depends on maintaining economic rights. The third perspective, which is the skeptical view, suggests there is no systematic relationship between democracy and economic growth. While it might mainly be true that there is more economic freedom under a democracy than an autocracy, there is no guarantee it will be at an optimum ( Esposto and Zaleski. 1999). Even in a democracy there will be those whose aims is to challenges the private property status quo if it is in their best interests, and because of the very reputation of a democracy they will have more opportunities to do so( Przewoki and Limongi, 1993).However, the empirical evidence on the three perspectives in not clear-cut. Sirowry and inkeles( 1990) review thirteen studies of which, sextet supported the skeptical view, four suggested qualified or conditional relationships, and three provided unconditional support for the conflict perspective. In a later survey, Brunetti ( 1997) reviewed 17 emp irical studies of the democracy-growth relationship. He found ( at p. 167) nine studies report no relationship, one study a positive, one study a negative, three studies a fragile negative relationship and three studies a fragile positive relationship between democracy and economic growth. Helliwell (1994), Barro (1996) and Tavares and Waczing (2001) found that democracy has either a non-significant or moderately weak negative effect on growth once other growth-determining variables are held constant. On the basis of the mixed findings in the literature, a reasonable conclusion is that We do not know whether democracy fosters or hinders growth (Przewoki and Limongi, 1993, P.64). However, as a provision to this, the balance of empirical evidence is with the conflict and skeptical views rather than the compatibility view.Effect of growth on DemocracyPolitical scientists have examined the effect of the economic growth on democracy. Most studies have found that economic growth generat es demands for political right ( Lipset, 1959 Bollen, 1979 Bollen and Jackman, 1985 Burkhart and Lewis-Beck, 1994). At one level, casual empiricism seems to also support the view that economic growth promotes democracy. As Gupta et al. ( 1998, pp. 589-590) note, all of the developed, industrialise nations have a democratic political system. In contrast, most of the nations in the poorest segment of the world community operate under various forms of non-democratic political system. However, This is not ture in a blanket sense. Casual observation also suggests that economic growth does not necessarily bring about a demand for democracy. There are examples of authoritarian regimes in Southeast Asia and the Middle East where citizens are willing to forego demand for political liberalization provided their economic needs are being met.In these instance there is a good argument that it is only when the authoritarians government stops delivering on the economic front that there are calls for more political rights. An example is the fall of the Suharto regime in Indonesia following the Asian financial crisis when spiraling inflation and unemployment prevented Suharto from delivering in the economic sphere. Glasure et al. ( 1999) obtain results that are consistent with this view. Their finding suggest that in developing countries and newly industrializing countries economic development has a significant effect on democratic performance, but opposition to Lipest( 1959) economic development leads to lower levels of democracy. Glasure et al. ( 1999, p. 475) conclude The sign reversal may stem from the possibility that as nations strive for economic development, the nations tend to trade off democracy for economic developmentDiscussion of the resultsIn the result using the Freedom House dataset, Botswana stands out as the one country where there is support for both the compatibility and Lipset hypothese, i.e. there is Granger causality between democracy and real GDP in the long run, and democracy and real GDP have a positive effect on each other. The results using the Beck et al. (2001) dataset confirm long-run Granger causality running from GDP to democracy and the GDP has positive effect on democracy. The democracy growth is well established in Botswana. The OECD (1999, p.29) posited Political stability has result fromfavorable economic conditions. While this is true, Botswanas economic success has also been built on democratic tradition in which there are no narrow ethnic-based interest groups with distinct means of expression, which has avoided infighting over diamonds and other political issue (Wiseman, 1990).Of course, Botswana has been described as an African success story ( Acemoglu et al., 2001) with the highest growth rate of any country in the world between 1960 and 1999. From 1965 to 1973 Bostswanas annual rate of growth of GDP was 14.8% which was the highest in the world except for the high income oil rich Oman (21.9%). From 1973 to 1984 Botswanas annual growth rate was 10.7% which was the highest in the world, outstripping Asian Tigers, Hong Kong (9.1%) and Singapore ( 8.2%) (World Bank, 1986). Between 1980 and 1990 Botswana grew at 11%, also the highest in the world over this period, with China second at 10.3% per annum. From 1990 to 2003 Botswanas growth slowed to 5.2% but was still in the top 12 countries in the World Bank world Development indicators list of countries over this period (World Bank, 2005). Botswana is one of only a few African countries with a democratic tradition (Wiseman, 1990). It has had continuous democracy since obtaining independence in 1996. The discovery of diamond mines has facilitated economic growth, but there is more to Botswanas success than simply having abundant congenital resources. There is universal agreement that the Botswana government has used the revenue from diamonds to pursue good policies (See e.g Acemoglu et al., 2001).ConclusionThe aim of this paper was to revie w the accumulated evidence on the impact of the democracy on economic growth. Existing studies and authors of primary studies have drawn inferences from only a limited set of information and have failed to shoot a decisive conclusion. In contrast, I apply analysis, critic to the pool of 6 studies with 10 published estimates of the democracy-growth associations, and are able to draw other variables conclusions. This in line with Bhagwatis (1995) prediction that democracy does not handicap development. Second, while the direct effect is found to be Zero, this research papers result indicates that democracy has significant indirect effects on growth through various channels. In particular, this study also finds that democracy has a favorable impact on human capital formation, on the level of economic freedom, inflation and political instability. However, This study also find that democracy is associated with greater government spending and less free international trade. Third, while t here is no evidence of a democracy-growth effect for all countries combined all together, there are clear regional effects. The available evidence suggests that democracy has a larger effect on economic growth in Latin America, and that this is lower in Asia. Moreover, it appears that there is country-specific effect like China. Fourth, by comparing the democracy-growth association to research conducted elsewhere on the economic freedom growth assocaiton( Doucouliagos and Ulubasoglu 2006), we find that democracys direct effect on growth is zero, while economic freedom has a positive direct effect. In short, this research paper conclude that the empirical evidence that has accumulate over the past 40 years points to a zero direct effect on growth and significant direct effects on growth through factor accumulation, economic freedom, inflation and openness, with an adverse effect through government spending. The net effect is that democracy does not harm economic performance. This analy sis paper can be applied to other dimension of democracy. For example, the links between democracy and the level of development rather than growth, the channels through which democracy impacts on both growth and development, as well as the determinants of democracy, are all promising areas for future research analysis to make more inclusive result.

Spiritual Healing :: essays research papers fc

An Exploration of Spiritual HealingThroughout time, mankind has constantly been seeking ways to claim their health and to cure those that had non been so fortunate in that task. Just about everything has been experimented with as a cure for some shell of illness whether physiologic or mental. There is also a third type of illness that can and is addressed, which is healing on the sacred plan. According to research, most of the spiritual healers argon concentrated in primitive societies and undeveloped areas of the world. However, there are still undertones of reliance on spiritual healing in modern medicine at present and there are some in civilized, well developed parts of the world that have rejected modern medicine all together and select alternative healing methods. Even a person who does not believe in a higher being actually takes part in this type cure simply by allowing the chemical medicines in his/her body to mend what is wrong. No bet what class of society a perso n is in, no matter how advanced that particular country is, there will always be traces of spiritual healing if not all-out practicing of it and it is and will continue to be a significant part of any healing process, large or small. There are numerous names for spiritual healers, but for simplicitys interestingness and the fact that the concentration is on American Indian Medicine, all spiritual healers will be lumped together as Shaman unless otherwise specified. This does not stringent that all healers will hold the same beliefs, or that a particular belief is not even held by a group known as Shamans, but rather a different type of healer. The grouping is just so that a detailed and confusing explaination of all the subsections of healers. If necessary, there will be specifications. Again , for clarification, definitions are provided to clear up any confusion. A Shaman is a person anchored securely in both the physical world and the spiritual realm-- a mediator if you will(Sham anism 1). Therefore, Shamanism is a way of life revolving around interaction of the spiritual and physical worlds(Shamanism). The Shaman does not solely exist as other humans do they lead a totally different life in conjunction with their earthly duties within their tribe. The two are not separate by any means one has direct impact on the other, or so it is believed by those who study this form of healing.

Illegal Typography :: Graffiti Crime Papers

Illegal TypographyEnter TAKI 183, a kid that lives on 183rd street in the Washington Heights argona of Manhattan. The number means precisely that, TAKI lives on 183rd street, therefore he chose his number street as a sign of location, as a base saying yo kid Im from 183rd . TAKI works as a messenger, going through all 5 boroughs of the city. When he travels he writes his name on all of the stations that he came upon, he was up (name organism written ein truthwhere). Which is an important part of graffiti, but this objective does not have any importance at this time.In 1971, a reporter from the New York clock looking for a story, tracked TAKI down and interviewed him. As a result the article was hot, this gave TAKI his 15 minutes, and sparked a citywide rush of all of these kids wanting fame that TAKI received. Kids were very impressed by the notoriety of a name that appeared all over the city, therefore they now realize the pride they felt in agreeing and having their friends see and talk about whom they saw up.The kids also realized that in order to get fame they must go beyond the neighborhood. This began the frenzy of competition for fame. As hundreds of kids quest what TAKI did, even though he followed someone named JULIO 204, that was writing graffiti for years, but never outside of his neighborhood. Realizing that they can drug abuse the transportation system for free advertising, is only what the writers needed for a mass audience. Their names traveled outside of the neighborhood, and increased their fame 1000 fold. Though I lived in Chicago I followed a akin(predicate) path. New York is considered the birthplace of artistic graffiti, even though the act is preformed all over the world before 1960. The history of graffiti is recent and brief, but has a monumental place in the art world. It is the only art movement that is illegal. And it does not contain a series of welfare kids from torn and broken single-parent homes that are screaming for atte ntion. The phenomenon differs from all other sorts of writing on the bathroom wall of a run-down bar. In New York 1960, teenagers began to write their names all over, I mean everywhere, soon are more surfaces written on then open space. All of these names are appearing, but they were nicknames, few choose to use their real names.
